What does breakdown cover include?Roadside, recovery and other options⌄
Policies differ, but common options include:
- Roadside assistance: help at the roadside, subject to location and terms.
- National recovery: transport to an eligible destination, subject to limits.
- Home start: assistance at or close to home, if included.
- Onward travel: a replacement vehicle, accommodation or alternative travel, if included.
- Personal or vehicle cover: cover attached to eligible people or specified vehicles.
Always check what your particular policy includes.
Which cover is right for you?Questions to ask before you choose⌄
- Does cover begin immediately, or is there a waiting period?
- Are there call-out, mileage, age or vehicle-size restrictions?
- What are the limits on recovery destinations and passenger transport?
- Are home start, onward travel and European travel included or optional?
- Is there an excess, additional fee or claim limit?
- Does the policy cover you, the vehicle, or both?
These are comparison questions, not a recommendation of a specific product.
Breakdown on a motorwayKnow the safety-first steps⌄
Go left, get safe, get help. If possible, leave at the next exit or reach a service area. If you cannot, move to an emergency area or hard shoulder where available and safe.
- Stop as far left as possible and switch on hazard warning lights; use sidelights if dark or visibility is poor.
- If safe, leave via the side furthest from moving traffic and get well away from the vehicle and road, behind a safety barrier if available.
- Keep passengers and children away from traffic. Do not attempt repairs or put a warning triangle on a motorway.
- Use the emergency telephone where available; in an emergency area, use it and follow the operator’s advice before rejoining.
Cannot reach safety or safely exit? Stay inside with your seatbelt fastened, keep hazard lights on and call 999 for the police immediately (or use your vehicle’s SOS button).
Broken down on another road?Assess traffic, visibility and your surroundings⌄
Move to a safe location if possible, use your hazard warning lights when appropriate and keep people away from moving traffic.
Only place a warning triangle if it is safe and lawful to do so; never place one on a motorway. If there is immediate danger or a serious emergency, call 999. Otherwise contact your breakdown provider or recovery service.
Before you call for assistanceInformation that helps the operator⌄
- Your location: road name, direction, junction, nearby landmark or motorway driver-location sign.
- Vehicle registration, make and model.
- What happened, whether the vehicle can move, and any warning lights.
- Number of passengers and any accessibility or other urgent needs.
- Whether you are in a live lane, emergency area or other risky location.
Only gather details when it is safe to do so. Your safety comes before taking photographs or checking the vehicle.
Reduce the chance of a breakdownA few useful pre-journey checks⌄
- Check tyres (including pressure and condition) and make sure lights work.
- Check relevant fluid levels and dashboard warnings in line with manufacturer guidance.
- Keep on top of routine servicing and investigate developing faults.
- Carry a charged phone, suitable clothing and your assistance contact details.
These steps may reduce avoidable problems but cannot prevent every breakdown.
Did you know?
On motorways, the hard shoulder is not necessarily the safest stopping place. A service area is preferable when reachable; an emergency area or hard shoulder may be a place of relative safety when necessary.
Quick knowledge check: Should you put a warning triangle on a motorway?
No. The Highway Code says not to place a warning triangle on a motorway. Keep clear of traffic and follow the breakdown safety steps instead.

Frequently Asked Questions - Breakdown & Recovery
What is breakdown cover?
Breakdown cover is a service that can provide assistance if a vehicle breaks down due to a mechanical or electrical problem. Depending on the provider and policy selected, services may include roadside assistance, vehicle recovery, home assistance and onward travel.
What does breakdown cover usually include?
Breakdown cover varies between providers. Common services include roadside assistance, vehicle recovery and optional extras such as home assistance or onward travel. The services available, limitations and exclusions depend on the individual provider's terms and conditions.
Is breakdown cover compulsory in the UK?
No, breakdown cover is not a legal requirement in the UK. However, motorists may choose to purchase it to access assistance if their vehicle breaks down unexpectedly.
What is the difference between roadside assistance and vehicle recovery?
Roadside assistance generally involves a technician attending a broken-down vehicle and attempting repairs. Vehicle recovery involves transporting the vehicle when it cannot be repaired at the roadside. The distance and destination covered depend on the provider's service terms.
Can breakdown cover include assistance at home?
Some breakdown providers offer home assistance, often referred to as Home Start. This may provide assistance if a vehicle fails to start at or near the policyholder's home address. Availability and eligibility depend on the provider and level of cover purchased.
Can older vehicles qualify for breakdown cover?
Some breakdown providers accept older vehicles, although eligibility requirements and vehicle age restrictions may apply. Motorists should check the relevant provider's terms before purchasing.
Does breakdown cover include flat batteries and punctures?
Many breakdown services provide assistance for common problems such as flat batteries and punctures. However, replacement parts, tyres and batteries may involve additional charges. The services included depend on the provider and policy.
Can breakdown cover start immediately?
Some breakdown providers offer immediate cover, while others apply waiting periods or restrictions for existing faults. Motorists should confirm the start date, eligibility requirements and any exclusions directly with the provider.
What should I do if my vehicle breaks down on a motorway?
If possible, leave the motorway at the next exit or motorway service area. If this is not possible, follow official motorway breakdown safety guidance.
Where safe, move to an emergency area or hard shoulder, activate your hazard warning lights and exit away from moving traffic to a place of safety.
If you cannot reach a safe stopping place or it is unsafe to leave your vehicle, remain inside with your seat belt fastened and call 999.
For further information, consult The Highway Code, Rules 275–279.
What is the difference between personal and vehicle breakdown cover?
Personal breakdown cover generally provides assistance to a named individual travelling in eligible vehicles, subject to the policy terms.
Vehicle breakdown cover generally applies to a specified vehicle, regardless of who is driving, provided the relevant policy conditions are met.
Availability and restrictions vary between providers.
Does UK breakdown cover include European travel?
European breakdown assistance is available from some providers, either as a separate product or an additional feature. Geographical restrictions, vehicle eligibility, trip duration limits and recovery arrangements vary. Always check the provider's terms before travelling.
